How To Get Rid Of A Couch

Where-Can-I-Throw-Away-a-Couch-Junk-King-CA

[This post was originally published in February 2019 and has been revised and updated to reflect the most current information.]

A new couch can make your living room pop and it can provide both comfort and style. Similarly, a worn-out couch detracts from your overall decor. Replacing your old couch is easier than removing it, however.

Couches and sofas are big.  Due to its size, a couch is also a bear to remove.

That's why it's such  good idea to rent a roll-off dumpster or to hire a junk removal service like Junk King to take it away. Your back will thank you and you won't need to call in a favor from a friend or neighbor. Letting a professional handle your couch disposal involves far less effort than any of the options listed below.

And Junk King will even recycle your couch whenever possible. This option is even more appealing if you have multiple furniture items or the couch was not yours to begin with, such as if you're a landlord and a former tenant has left one behind.

But if you want to know how to get rid of a couch for free, keep reading.

New call-to-action

Do You Have to Do This Yourself?

Maybe not. Ideally, the best way to throw away a couch is to let someone take it away for free. But who would be willing to do that? Here are some other ideas for free - or almost free - couch disposal:

  • The retail store where you bought your new couch? Nope, not for free. Many, if not most will take it away, but they will typically require a couch disposal fee.

  • Charities like Habitat for Humanity? Maybe. This is a great, green solution and the sofa donation can even be deducted from your taxes. But even charities require clean, spotless couches. Odds are if your couch has a number of years of wear and tear, its condition might not be that great.

  • Friendly strangers, who pick up your couch after you and a friend haul it to the curb? Perhaps in some areas. But it's difficult for people to pick up and take a couch. In fact, the larger the item, the less curb-friendly it is. And if it rains, nobody will want to haul away an old, wet couch.

  • Local waste management? Possibly, but you should call first to see if they take heavy or oversize items. They might have a particular day in the month or season for this service, but  there may be an extra charge. While this isn't exactly "free", it may be cheaper than hiring someone to take it away.

  • Craig's List? A good ad online might help. You need some large, clear images and an inviting description to boost your responses and Craig's List ads tend to work best within the first day or two.

  • If you own or can borrow a flatbed truck, you could get some help carrying your sofa to the truck and haul it to the nearest dump. But even that may not be free. If you can't get use of  a truck, you'll need to rent a U-Haul van or something similar.

  • Your sofa likely has some metal parts in the arms or framework. Another possible option is to call your local scrap metal dealer. He may be interested, but you'll most likely have to deliver it.

How to Get Rid of A Couch? You Can Break It Down and Dump It.

If you want to dispose of a couch in your trash bin or an available dumpster, you will need some tools and some time and work  as it requires disassembling your couch or sofa. But, hey, it's free!

  • First, get your tools ready. A box cutter or circular saw, or even a hand saw, will help. Wear clothes that can get dirty or torn. Be safe: wear gloves for cutting, a face mask to avoid inhaling particles, and safety goggles.

  • If the sofa belonged to someone else, remember to wash your clothes as soon as possible after you're done. Some parts of the country have problems with bed bugs - they don't just live in mattresses.

  • Start by cutting off the padding. A box cutter can do the job, but a circular saw works better. Be careful to avoid handling the cushion material, which could possibly have toxic properties. Don't keep the cushions.

  • Cut off whatever fabric you can remove to expose the wood frame.

  • Cut the wood frame into smaller parts that are easy to throw away. Avoid metal parts, such as springs and nails, when sawing, especially with powered saws.

  • Throw the cut down parts in a dumpster or trash can.

If all this sounds like a lot of work, you're right! But it is a free way to throw away a couch.
